Three beautiful beaches...our pick of the best beaches in West Cornwall

Beautiful Porthtowan beach is of course right on our doorstep but if you would like to explore other beaches in the area here are a few of our absolute favourites.

Our number one pick would have to be be spectacular Sennen Cove/Whitesand Bay, on the very southwest tip of Cornwall. Just a few miles along the coast path from Lands End, this wide sweep of dune backed sand looks straight out into the wild Atlantic, with nothing but a few lonely islands and lighthouses until you hit the east coast of America. The beach offers great surfing, is a fabulous picnic spot and has arguably some of the best sunsets in the UK.

We particularly recommend The Old Success Inn or Little bo cafe for a cream tea or delicious meal with a view, and be sure to check out the Round House & Capstan Gallery for beautiful local crafts and art works.

A close second in our view is beautiful Perranporth, which offers miles of golden sands, great surf and a lovely little sea pool in the rocks at the centre of the beach. At low tide you can stroll for miles along the tideline, enjoying the wild windswept panorama (watch out for the tide), or plunge in for a refreshing dip in the surf in the lifeguarded area.

Enjoy an ice cream on a comfy outdoor sofa with a view at The Pavilion or a meal at The Watering Hole with its spectacular location right on the beach. A thoroughly recommended day out.

If you are looking for a calm family beach, you couldn't get much better than Porthminster, just a few miles from Seashells and a short stroll from the centre of St Ives.

Calm, crystal clear waters and smooth golden sands make for an almost tropical feel, complete with the fabulous Porthminster Cafe, which overlooks the beach and offers outstanding food and views.

When you have had your fill of the beach, don't miss the opportunity to stroll into town to take in it's lovely little harbour and the many arty crafty shops you will find there.
